Approach Caregiving Topics with Sensitivity

A “family caregiver” may be a spouse, child, other relative or a friend of the person who needs assistance. In all cases, you are the person’s link to the world of a completely independent life that they once had.

It is important to be sensitive as to how your comments may be perceived. The best thing to do is to place yourself in the person’s shoes and think about how you might react. An offer of help, expression of concern, or a suggestion to consider a life change such as housing can trigger feelings of insecurity or resentment.

Acknowledging the need for help can cause the person to grieve for the loss of complete independence. Whether due to age, chronic illness or a sudden medical or mental health issue, accepting help is likely not a welcome step.
