Recovery-based Treatment
Emergency Information
PLEASE CALL 9-1-1 FOR LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCIES
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 9-1-1
As of April 2005, every county in Tennessee can receive 9-1-1 calls. Since 2005, 9-1-1 across Tennessee will be able to locate your address. This is true for all traditional (wireline) phones. However, there are two exceptions that you need to know:
1) Wireless phones (such as cell phones) – from some pre-paid phones and some cell phones you always need to know your location when you call 9-1-1.
2) Voice-Over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) – this is the newest type of phone service. At the present time, most of the companies that provide this service DO NOT provide 9-1-1 service or tell their customers that they can buy it for an additional charge.
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU KNOW THIS
During an emergency, it is more difficult to give information clearly and succinctly for anybody. For some of us, stress makes it even harder to think and communicate under pressure.
LUCKILY, THERE ARE STEPS YOU CAN AND SHOULD TAKE AHEAD OF TIME TO PROTECT YOUR SAFETY:
This is accepted practice within any 9-1-1 Center:
1) When you have move into a new home, call 9-1-1 and tell them you are making a "Test 9-1-1 Call from a newly established service" to verify all information is correct.
2) The 9-1-1 operator should check to make sure that all information that appears on their screen is correct (this includes your name, address, apartment or lot number if applicable, and phone number).
3) If you have chosen to use a wireless phone for your primary phone service, the 9-1-1 operator should be able to verify your location.
